After three weeks in the hospital with my mom and during two weeks in self-isolation recovering from a virus during the time COVID-19 tests were not readily available, I spent my time intensively researching viruses, working on my personal healing, and developing new routines.
To share da Love, I’ll be sending out my discoveries through our award-winning Women’s Biz Coop newsletter and blog.
In this blog, I’ll write about with whom I came into contact.
Where did we leave off?
Day 4, the first case had arrived in the area. So far, no one mentioned symptoms of nausea and dizziness. Now I assume that I have a virus. It could be the flu or it could be COVID-19. I don’t know, because there’s no testing available. That’s the last day that I visit my Mom in the hospital.
That night I stopped by Vitamin Shoppe to get vitamins. I’ll delineate which ones I bought and why in another email: How I Healed Myself. Many people were buying witch hazel and tea tree oil to sanitize and clean. The sales person said that we were the first people to buy vitamins for our immunity. There were four people in the store.
After, I went to Wegmans liquor store to buy Everclear, so I could make my own hand sanitizer with aloe vera gel. Earlier in the year, I had the worst Florida sunburn on my back that kept me up at night and made the cells on my back twitch. I was grateful that I had a bottle of aloe vera gel in stock. We spoke to one sales person and the cashier. There were about 12 people in the store.
Homemade Hand Sanitizer Recipe!
Pour into a small travel container:
- 1/3 Aloe Vera gel
- 2/3 any alcohol over 60%
Shake and mix well. Squeeze liberally to rub all over your hands, when you can’t wash your hands with soap and water.
Lastly, I visited Wegmans supermarket. It was the only grocery store open and I bought enough fresh fruits, vegetables, and food to last 2-3 weeks. The few people that were there were buying shopping carts of food. I spoke to one sales person and the cashier. There were about 15 people in the store.
The next day, I headed out to H-mart during the day for Korean groceries. I was greeted with a smiling woman handing out wipes to sanitize our hands and carts. Unfortunately, there were people laughing and throwing them away. There were about 20 people in the store.
Before my mom came back home on St. Patrick’s Day, I went to her local grocery store to pick up food and supplies for her for two weeks. It was tough. I almost fell down from dizziness and nausea, but held onto the cart. There were about 50 people in the store as the rush had started and empty paper product aisles.
Take into account that at the beginning of the rush and stay-at-home order, my total exposure was 101 people.
I wasn’t wearing a mask, for masks weren’t recommended at the time. Only at H-mart had I used the wipe that they handed out and washed my hands in the bathroom that had smelled from spilled kimchi.
For symptoms, my breathing was OK, but my chest was heavy, like a small animal was sitting on top of me. I didn’t know that later it would creep down my throat and into my chest.
One day I felt I was getting better and the next day I was worse. I didn’t know if I was coming or going. I had entered the phase of the cha-cha: one step forward and two steps back.
Watch this video on the cha-cha:
Hope this helps you not to cha-cha in your life…
I’ll continue my journey in the next email: Flu or Virus: Where I was by When.
We are so grateful for all of our friends and front-line, essential employees: first responders, grocery stores clerks, sanitation and utility personnel, warehouse workers, delivery folks, nurses, doctors, EMTs, civil service workers, farmers, pharmaceutical personnel, mail carriers, truckers, state government employees, military personnel, bank tellers, non-profit leaders, and journalists.
